Vetmedin (Pimobendan) contains an active component that is derived from benzimidazole-pyridazinone and it is used to manage symptoms of mild to severe congestive heart failure in canines occurring as a result of dilated cardiomyopathy or myxomatousmitral valve disease (sometimes referred to as endocardiosis). This medicine exhibits inotropic and potent vasodilator properties. Treatment may help to improve the health and survival chances of affected dogs.
The medicine content for each Vetmedin (Pimobendan) half scored chewable tablet is 5mg. Use of this medicine will only be recommended in cases with strong clinical evidence of congestive heart failure. Tests on the animal`s diuretic responsiveness or even radiographs may be required in order to accurately diagnose the condition. When calculating the correct dosage, the veterinarian will take into account the dog`s weight, and prescribe the medicine at a rate of 0.23mg per pound of body weight (or 0.5mg per kilogram). The medicine is administered in two daily doses, given roughly 12 hours apart, however, it may be necessary to divide the tablets into halves. As a result of this, it is possible that the two doses may not be equal.
Dog owners should be aware of the possible side effects exhibited by animals undergoing treatment with Vetmedin (Pimobendan) for congestive heart failure:
Veterinary treatment will be needed as soon as possible if your animal suffers from side effects as a result of taking this medicine.
It may be necessary for a veterinarian to conduct regular health checks on your dog, to check for signs of arrhythmias or other symptoms.
This medicine is approved for veterinary use only and must never be taken by humans.
