Pimobendan comes in a pack of 30 tablets and is available in two different dosages - 1.25mg and 5mg.
The recommended dosage is 0.23 mg/lb (0.5 mg/kg) body weight. This can be rounded to the nearest half tablet. Where possible, divide the daily dosage into two seperate doses and give approximately 12 hours apart. Safeheart tablets are taken orally.
Common side effects noted during use of Pimobendan include poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, dyspnea, azotemia, weakness and ataxia, pleural effusion, syncope, cough, sudden death, ascites, and heart murmur.
Safeheart should only be used to treat heart failure caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Safeheart may not be safe for dogs with asymptomatic heart disease or in heart failure caused by etiologies other than AVVI or DCM.
The safety of Pimobendan has not been evaluated in dogs under 6 months of age, dogs with diabetes, pregnant dogs, or lactating dogs.
Pimobendan is contraindicated in cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or any other clinical condition where an augmentation of cardiac output is inappropriate for functional or anatomical reasons.
Safeheart is safe for use in dogs only. It must not be taken for human consumption.
