Prilium (Imidapril Hydrochloride) is a powder which is reconstituted into a solution and used to treat canine heart failure. This helps to reduce the load on the dog`s heart and increase its output, thereby helping to treat the condition. A prodrug is contained as the primary ingredient in this medicine, which is hydrolyzed into imidaprilat (the active metabolite) by the liver. Following this, it is quickly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract.
Its mechanism of action is inhibiting the angiotensin converting enzyme (commonly abbreviated to ACE), which decreases the formation of a substance that is known to tighten and constrict the blood vessels (angiotensin II). In addition to this, it is also able to interfere with the process in which bradykinin (a mediator of inflammation which reduces blood pressure by triggering vasodilation) is broken down. Both of these therapeutic effects help to widen the blood vessels, leading to a decrease in blood pressure without causing an increased heart rate.
Prilium (Imidapril Hydrochloride) powder needs to be mixed with water so that a solution can be formed, allowing for it to be administered to the dog that requires treatment. When the medicine is reconstituted, the strength is 5mg per ml. Generally, the required daily dosage is determined according to the body weight of the dog. In some cases, veterinarians may advise administering 0.05ml of the solution per kilogram of body weight to dogs in the 7.5kg to 30kg weight range.
To reconstitute the solution, fill the entire vial with water. The line on the vial indicates how much water is required. Place the child proof cap on the bottle and thoroughly shake it. After this, the child proof cap can be removed and the dosing syringe provided can be used to measure the required amount of medicine. Never administer excess amounts of the medicine to your dog, and ensure that you comply with all of the dosage instructions provided by the veterinarian.
If your dog is given Prilium (Imidapril Hydrochloride) to treat its symptoms, there is a possibility that side effects may occur. You should take the dog to a veterinarian if it is sick or suffering from side effects. Examples of reactions that can occur include:
It is worth noting that other reactions which have not been referenced above may also occur.
Prilium (Imidapril Hydrochloride) is a veterinary medicine which is only to be used in the treatment of animals. It must never be used to treat human patients.
This medication is not to be used in dogs affected by low blood pressure, stenoses, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, acute renal insufficiency or congenital heart disease.
