Description

Uses

Soloxine (Levothyroxine Sodium) treats canine hypothyroidism by replenishing the dog`s thyroid hormone (T4) levels. This in turn helps to compensate for the thyroid gland`s insufficient production of hormones, thereby relieving the common symptoms of hypothyroidism, a type of metabolic disorder which causes increased weight, low activity levels, slow movement, hair loss, sensitivity to cold weather and other symptoms due to thyroid gland atrophy.

This condition is more common in middle aged and old dogs, however young animals can also be affected. Treatment with this medicine aims to reverse these symptoms by stimulating the dog`s metabolism and growth of tissues while also improving energy exchange. Use of this medicine can help lead to weight loss, healthier looking fur and a noticeable improvement in the dog`s desire to be active. Owners may start to witness an improvement in the dog`s metabolic symptoms after 4 weeks of treatment.

Dosage and Administration

Soloxine (Levothyroxine Sodium) tablets contain 0.1mg of the active component. There is also a 0.3mg strength variety available. The correct amount of medicine needed depends on your dog`s weight. When treatment commences, veterinarians normally calculate the starting dosage based on a rate of 0.1mg per 10lb of body weight, given twice per day. After this, the veterinarian may conduct medical tests on the dog`s thyroid blood levels every 4 weeks.

Based on the results of these tests, all the necessary changes to the dosage regimen will be made until a satisfactory maintenance dosage can be determined. Generally speaking, the maintenance dosage is 0.1mg of medicine per 10lbs. However, this can differ based on each dog`s unique circumstances and in all cases, the decision of the veterinarian is final. The tablets can be fed directly to the dog or mixed in with its food.

Side effects

If Soloxine (Levothyroxine Sodium) is administered in safe amounts as directed by the veterinarian, side effects are considered to be an uncommon occurrence. An overdose could cause thyrotoxicosis. Should your dog become unwell, or if you suspect it to be suffering from side effects, bring it to the veterinarian straight away.

Precautions

Soloxine (Levothyroxine Sodium) should not be used in cases of acute myocardial infarction, adrenal insufficiency and thyrotoxicosis.
