Baytril (Enrofloxacin) is a type of fluoroquinolone antibiotic which is used for veterinary purposes, to treat dermal infections and cystitis caused by susceptible bacteria. The 15mg strength tablets may be used to treat cats and dogs, whereas the 50mg and 150mg forms are indicated for dogs. This antibiotic is a type of bactericidal agent, which can act against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. It works by causing an interference with the DNA metabolism by blocking certain enzymes, thereby resulting in bacterial cell death, allowing for the infection to be treated.
Baytril (Enrofloxacin) antimicrobial flavor tablets are administered orally. After diagnosis, the vet will calculate the proper dosage, taking into account the animal`s body weight, the susceptibility of the microorganism responsible for the infection and the condition being treated. Generally, veterinarians determine the dosage at a rate of 2.27mg to 9.07mg per pound of body weight (5mg to 20mg per kilogram). Pet owners are sometimes told to administer the medicine once per day, or else as two separate doses given 12 hours apart. Treatment must continue until the veterinarian is satisfied, usually for 2 to 3 days after clinical signs have ceased. In most cases, veterinarians state that the maximum treatment period is 30 days.
Possible reactions which have been reported in pets treated with Baytril (Enrofloxacin) include some of the following:
Ensure that your animal is taken to a veterinarian if it becomes sick or shows signs of side effects. Immediate treatment will be needed if a serious reaction occurs.
This antibiotic medication is approved for veterinary use only. It must not be taken by humans under any circumstances.
Quinolone type antibiotics need to be used cautiously in pets affected by disorders of the CNS (central nervous system), as there is a possibility of seizures.
