Vasotop (Ramipril) is a veterinary ACE inhibitor which is used to treat congestive heart failure in dogs. In certain cases, veterinarians may recommend use alongside diuretics or other medicines. The goal of treatment with this medicine is to improve the cardiovascular function of the dog, which can lead to relief from the clinical signs of this condition as well as the dog`s survival chances. This is achieved by inhibiting ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme), resulting in systemic vasodilation (a widening of blood vessels) and reduced peripheral vascular resistance.
Vasotop (Ramipril) is available in 1.25mg and 2.5mg strength versions. If a veterinarian diagnoses your animal with congestive heart failure, an appropriate tablet regimen will need to be determined. This will be based on the body weight of the animal, and the vet will normally weigh the dog when calculating the required dosage. Generally, the medicine is administered by mouth, once per day. All pet owners must take special care to only give their animal the amount of medicine that the veterinarian tells them to administer. Never change your animal`s dosage or exceed the recommended amount.
Close monitoring of all pets that are undergoing treatment with Vasotop (Ramipril) is required at all times, and any animal exhibiting symptoms of a reaction or signs of illness must be brought to a veterinarian immediately.
This medicine is for the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs. Therefore, it is only approved for veterinary use. Under no circumstances should it be taken by humans.
Concomitant treatment with ACE inhibitors and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may result in acute renal failure.
