Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) is indicated for treating hypertension. Patients affected by this condition may be prescribed this drug to lower their blood pressure, thereby helping to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events. However, in addition to taking this medicine, patients will also be given other instructions to minimize the risk of cardiovascular events, such as exercising, reduction of sodium intake, diabetes management and other steps as deemed necessary.
Another use for this drug is treating Prinzmetal`s angina and chronic stable angina. It may be used on its own for this purpose, or in combination with other drugs. The active ingredient in this medication belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It lowers blood pressure by widening the blood vessels.
You will need to visit your physician before starting treatment with Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) tablets, so that the suitability of treatment with this drug can be determined, as well as the proper dose. It is common for adults treating high blood pressure to be prescribed an initial dose of 5mg, taken once per day. The maximum dose is 10mg per day, however, any adjustments to the dosage will only take place if the prescribing physician deems it necessary. Other conditions may require different dosage regimens.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages may reduce your blood pressure even more and could possibly increase certain side effects of this medicine. Therefore, you may be told by your physician to limit or avoid alcohol during treatment.
