IRBECOR (Irbesartan) is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure and diabetic nephropathy associated with type 2 diabetes. Its mechanism of action is preventing the blood vessels from narrowing so as to help facilitate the improved flow of blood. Angiotensin II is a type of vasoconstrictor (meaning that it causes tightening of the blood vessels) which contributes to hypertension. It also plays a role in salt and fluid retention by the kidneys.
This medicine selectively binds to the receptors that angiotensin II acts on, which in turn results in widening of the peripheral blood vessels and a reduction in blood pressure. It also helps to increase the volume of fluid that the kidneys extract from the blood, meaning that less fluid is present inside the blood vessels. This leads to a further reduction of resistance in the blood vessels.
IRBECOR (Irbesartan) film coated tablets should be taken in accordance with the dosage instructions provided by the physician in charge of treatment. Physicians may direct adults who are taking this medicine for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetic nephropathy to start treatment with an initial dosage of 150mg, taken once per day. This may then be adjusted to 300mg per day, however it is also possible that the physician will direct the patient to continue taking 150mg per day as a maintenance dosage. Never take more than the dosage recommended by your physician.
Report all side effects that occur during treatment with IRBECOR (Irbesartan) to your physician. Some possible reactions are listed here:
Patients should be aware of the fact that other reactions could also occur. If you are affected by any severe adverse events, consult your physician straight away. These can include a confused feeling, sudden increases in body weight, urinating much less than normal and other serious side effects that have not been referenced in this paragraph.
Patients with liver disease, kidney disease or congestive heart failure must inform their physician of their condition before starting treatment with IRBECOR (Irbesartan) tablets.
Should you become dizzy as a result of taking this medicine, avoid driving or operating machinery until you feel that you are fully able to do so safely.
Your physician may wish to monitor your progress, and regular checking of your blood pressure may be needed during the course of treatment with this medicine.
