GTN Spray

GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is administered to prevent chest pain caused by exercise in patients with angina or else to rapidly relieve symptoms of an angina attack. The active ingredient is sometimes referred to as nitroglycerin. Angina pain happens because of the heart temporarily receiving an insufficient amount of blood. This usually occurs as a result of stressful physical activity, excitement, anger, tension, workouts or other related causes.

Administration of this spray works by widening the arteries, which is due to it being changed into nitric oxide, its active metabolite. After this, it is released in the cells of the vessels, causing the coronary vessels to become wider. It also helps to decrease the heart`s workload. This leads to an increased supply of blood and oxygen to the heart, which in turn relieves the chest pain that can occur during an angina attack.

GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is sprayed onto or under the tongue, after which it is quickly absorbed into the blood vessels. It is either used as soon as an angina attack is noticed or else just before engaging in activities which may trigger an angina attack. Your physician will most likely instruct you to sit down when an angina attack occurs. This is to prevent injury from falling over if you become dizzy or faint due to the medicine.

Your physician will tell you how much medicine to administer. In some cases, adult patients may be told to use 1 to 2 metered doses when an angina attack occurs. Never administer more than 3 doses in any 15 minute period, and do not exceed the amount your physician tells you to use. If your symptoms do not improve, treatment will be needed straight away.

Administration of GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) can cause side effects, and a list of examples is provided here:

• Flushing
• Weakness
• Spinning sensation
• Feeling lightheaded
• Burning sensation in the mouth

Notify your physician of any side effects you experience. Severe reactions will require medical treatment as soon as possible. Examples include blurry vision, sever, skin blistering and other side effects which have not been mentioned here.

Do not drink alcohol while you are being treated with this medicine.

Certain erectile dysfunction medicines can interact with this medicine and cause severe dizziness and low blood pressure, which could be fatal. Discuss this with your physician and avoid any unsafe medications.
