Olmesmart (Olmesartan Medoxomil) is classified as an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and it lowers high blood pressure by reducing peripheral vascular resistance. This causes the blood vessels to widen, which in turn allows for a lowering of blood pressure. The mechanism of action is primarily due to inhibiting the vasoconstrictor effects of the peptide hormone angiotensin II (meaning that it is prevented from causing the blood vessels to become tighter).
This is achieved by stopping angiotensin II from binding to its receptors. Because angiotensin II is responsible for modulating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone syndrome, preventing it from binding to its receptors thereby helps to cause vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and reduce resistance within the arteries.
The increase in space inside the arteries allows for a drop in blood pressure. In addition to this, it also helps to decrease the secretion of aldosterone, which allows for more fluid to be removed from the blood vessels, and this also helps contribute to a lowering of high blood pressure.
Olmesmart (Olmesartan Medoxomil) comes in tablet form and is administered orally. Your physician will bring you in for a medical checkup and assess the severity of your symptoms. Blood pressure checks may also be needed. The main ingredient in this medicine is a prodrug, meaning that it is converted into its active form while it is in the process of being absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract.
Physicians sometimes instruct adults treating hypertension to start out with 20mg taken once per day. If deemed to be necessary, the physician may increase the patient`s daily dosage to 40mg per day. However, patients must not make any changes to the dosage schedule unless told to do so by their physician.
Treatment with Olmesmart (Olmesartan Medoxomil) may lead to side effects. Consult your physician if this happens. Some examples are listed here:
Severe adverse events that will require medical care or an immediate visit to the hospital include a reduction in the frequency at which you urinate, weight loss, bloody urine and other possible serious side effects that have not been referenced in this paragraph.
Olmesmart (Olmesartan Medoxomil) does not cure high blood pressure, and treatment may be required to continue in order to ensure that your symptoms are properly controlled. Regular blood pressure checks may also be ordered by your physician.
Before starting treatment, inform your physician if you are currently affected by or have a history of suffering from any medical conditions affecting the liver, kidneys or heart.
