Ventolin Inhaler (Salbutamol) is an asthma inhaler which is used to provide relief from or to prevent a bronchospasm. Some people refer to this type of inhaler a quick relief inhaler, as it may sometimes be prescribed for use during an asthma attack, to help open up the airways in the lungs and provide relief from wheezing, breathlessness or tightness in the chest. It does this by acting on the beta 2 receptors in the lungs, allowing it to work directly where needed. Physicians may also prescribe it for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and to prevent exercise induced bronchospasms.
Your physician will give you proper instructions on how to use Ventolin Inhaler (Salbutamol) and it is important to ensure that you know how to properly use it. This medicine is inhaled directly into the lungs, using the inhaler provided. Patients who are using this medicine to prevent or treat bronchospasm may be directed to administer 2 inhalations at 4 to 6 hour intervals. If it is being used to prevent bronchospasms caused by exercise, it is possible that the patient will be instructed by a physician to administer 2 inhalations roughly 15 to 30 minutes before exercising.
Possible side effects of Ventolin Inhaler (Salbutamol) may include:
You are advised to discuss any side effects that occur with your physician. If you notice tremors, anxiety, signs of low potassium, hypertension symptoms, breathing problems or any other signs of a serious reaction, seek immediate medical attention.
In rare cases, patients may experience increased wheezing immediately after using an inhaler. This is called paradoxical bronchospasm. You will require medical care straight away if you notice a worsening of breathing after using the inhaler.
If prescribed a quick relief inhaler, it is important to carry it with you at all times.
