Tilade (Nedocromil Sodium) is indicated for regular use in patients with asthma. It works by preventing asthma attacks and other symptoms. This inhaler is only used as a preventative management option as it will not work quickly enough to provide effective relief from the symptoms of an asthma attack which is already underway. The active ingredient in this medicine is an anti-inflammatory agent which is referred to as a cromone, and its mechanism of action involves stabilizing the mast cells so as to prevent the release of histamine (a natural substance that can cause inflammation). In addition to this, the activation or release of other inflammatory cell types that can contribute to asthma symptoms (eosinophils, platelets and monocytes) can also be prevented. Treatment can therefore help to reduce inflammation inside the lungs, which allows for easier breathing while also reducing the occurrence of asthma attacks.
Tilade (Nedocromil Sodium) is administered using the inhaler provided. Each actuation (metered dose) will deliver 2mg of the medicine, and it should be administered regularly in accordance with the instructions given by the physician in charge of treatment. Adult patients are generally directed by their physician to begin treatment with 4mg (2 sprays) administered 4 times per day. When the symptoms are deemed to be under control, the physician may reduce the dosage to 4mg (2 sprays), twice per day. Before the first use, the inhaler should be primed by pressing on it 4 times. This will release 4 test sprays into the air, and will ensure that the inhalation device is properly primed for use. Ask your physician if you are unsure of how to properly use the inhaler.
If any side effects occur as a result of treatment with Tilade (Nedocromil Sodium) inhaler, make sure that your physician is made aware. Some reactions which patients treated with this medicine have noticed include:
Patients may also experience other side effects. It will be necessary to immediately consult your physician if you suffer from a worsening of your breathing symptoms or any other severe adverse reactions which have not been referenced here.
Tilade (Nedocromil Sodium) inhaler needs regular cleaning with slightly hot water to prevent it from becoming blocked due to excess powder building up. Allow it to dry overnight before using it again.
Regular use of this inhaler is needed in order for it to be effective. In general, 1 week (or more) of treatment will be necessary before it fully takes effect and the maximum positive effects are noticed.
