Ipravent (Ipratropium Bromide) is classified as an anticholinergic, and its mechanism of action is helping to open and widen the airways, so as to ease the airflow into the lungs. This is useful in the control and maintenance treatment of COPD (an abbreviation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and it is widely used by patients suffering from emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma and other forms of obstructive airway disease. When administered by inhalation, this medicine acts on the bronchial smooth muscle of the lungs, where it targets the muscarinic receptors. It is able to antagonize (block) the activity of the chemical transmitter which is responsible for causing contraction and relaxation of the airways (known as acetyhcholine). As a result of this, the free flow of air into the lungs is increased due to airway obstruction being reduced.
Ipravent (Ipratropium Bromide) inhaler is administered on a regular basis, so as to ensure that the airways remain open. However, it will not quickly open up the airways, as other short-acting inhalers (relievers) do, and must therefore not be used to treat acute asthma attacks. Generally, its peak effects occur 30 to 60 minutes after application, lasting for roughly 3 to 6 hours. Sufficient medicine is contained in the inhaler so as to provide 200 metered doses, and each actuation administered 20mcg of the medicine. The dosage might differ based on your own circumstances, and your physician will individualize the dosage so that it is consistent with the goals of treatment. You must only administer the amount of inhalations that your physician deems necessary.
Make sure that you report any side effects caused by the anticholinergic medicine Ipravent (Ipratropium Bromide) to your physician. Possible reactions can include:
The above list is not complete, and patients should note that other reactions may occur. You will require emergency medical care if you suffer from a painful sensation when passing urine, reduced urination, soreness in the eyes, visual disturbances, bronchospasms and any other severe adverse events which have not been referenced in this paragraph.
If you notice that Ipravent (Ipratropium Bromide) is no longer as effective as it used to be, and that your wheezing is not prevented for as long as it was previously, this could be an indicator that your condition is worsening, and you will need to consult your physician straight away.
Do not allow any of the medicine to accidentally get sprayed into the eyes. This is especially important in patients affected by or at risk of glaucoma.
Sometimes, patients may experience paradoxical bronchospasms, which is the name given to the sudden occurrence of increased wheezing directly after use of the inhaler. Make sure that you get immediate medical attention if this occurs.
