AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) is a beta adrenergic receptor antagonist which works on the beta adrenoceptors in the heart, and blocks them. This helps to reduce blood pressure. Other indications include management of angina so as to help decrease the occurrence of angina attacks, while also helping to bring about an increase in the patient`s tolerance to exercise. It is also widely used to help treat a myocardial infarction, as well as other related conditions.
This medication exhibits its therapeutic benefits by blocking the beta receptors, so as to specifically inhibit the action of catecholamines (substances released by the body in response to stress) in neuron sites throughout the body. These chemicals can have different effects on the body, which can include increasing the heart rate. By preventing them from acting on the heart, it helps to decrease the heart rate, which contributes to a reduction in high blood pressure. This can also help to lower the amount of oxygen needed by the heart, especially when exercising, thereby making it effective in the treatment of angina.
Physicians have also treated patients with it for the prevention of migraine attacks. Other uses for which patients have taken it include heart failure, conditions which cause palpitations, hyperthyroidism and other disorders not listed here. Significant research has been carried out on its effects if used for other medical conditions, such as social anxiety disorder, and in some cases, physicians may treat patients affected by disorders that have not been listed here with this medication.
AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) tablets are specially designed to release the medicine into the body at a controlled rate, so that the level of medication remains consistent in between doses. The controlled release tablets are available as 23.75mg, 47.5mg, 95mg and 190mg strength varieties and your physician will decide which strength is best for you.
Adults undergoing treatment for hypertension which is mild to moderate in nature may be directed by their physician to start with 47.5mg per day, and the physician may adjust this if necessary, possibly increasing the dosage so that it ranges from 95mg to 190mg per day. Patients affected by angina may be told to take 95mg to 190mg per day (the exact amount will be decided by the physician). Other disorders may require a different dosage. Always comply with the instructions of your physician.
Administration of AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) may lead to side effects, and you will have to tell your physician if this happens. Possible reactions include:
Attend the emergency room or consult your physician straight away if you suffer from coldness in the feet and ankles, feeling as though you may lose consciousness, weight increases or any other severe reactions not referenced in this paragraph.
Sudden withdrawal of treatment with AFT-Metoprolol (Metoprolol Succinate) can pose a threat to the patient. Your physician will slowly reduce the dosage when treatment is being stopped, so as to lower the risk of aggravation or other serious health risks.
You may become drowsy after taking this medicine. Remember that driving or any other tasks that require alertness must be avoided unless you are sure that it is completely safe to do so.
