Campicillin (Ampicillin) is used to kill a wide range of bacteria which can be responsible for causing infections. It is effective against gram positive organisms, as well as various other gram negative bacteria. Indications include airway infections such as bronchitis, ear infections (otitis media and others), sinusitis, infections occurring in the internal organs, gonorrhea, urinary tract infections and various others not listed here. E. coli and Salmonella infections have also been treated with it.
This medicine is classified as a penicillin, and is effective against streptococci, the majority of enterococci strains, as well as salmonella, neisseria gonorrhoeae, hemophilusi influenza, shigella and various others. However, there are some microorganisms that it may not be effective against, due to the fact that it is inactivated by penicillinase. Its mechanism of action is bactericidal, meaning that it affects the bacteria`s cell walls, and the structure that keeps them intact. Resulting from this, holes occur in the cells and the bacteria are killed. This allows the infection to heal.
Campicillin (Ampicillin) 500mg capsules are taken by mouth, on an empty stomach. It should be administered either 1 hour prior to the consumption of a meal, or if you have eaten, you should wait for 2 hours before taking it. This will ensure that the active ingredient is properly absorbed into the bloodstream. Dosage requirements will vary depending on the patient`s individual circumstances.
Some patients treating infections of the gastrointestinal tract may be told by their physician to take 1 capsule (500mg) 4 times daily, at regular intervals. Genitourinary tract infections (except for gonorrhea) may also be treated with the same dosage. The length of time for which treatment will be required to continue will differ, so you will need to pay close attention to your physician`s instructions.
If you suffer from any side effects during treatment with Campicillin (Ampicillin) capsules, ensure that you tell the physician responsible for providing medical treatment. Some possible side effects are listed here:
Contact your physician immediately if you experience chills, signs of fever, reduced urination, bloody diarrhea, bruising or any other serious side effects which have not been referenced in this paragraph.
Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections, and Campicillin (Ampicillin) is no exception. It is not effective for the treatment of flu or common colds.
Patients who are undergoing treatment for an infection caused by gonorrhea may need to have a test conducted for other sexually transmitted diseases.
