Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial based infections, however its primary use is to fight UTI (urinary tract infections). It may also be prescribed to treat chronic bronchitis and traveller`s diarrhea which is caused by E. Coli. It is usually only prescribed to relatively healthy adults however may be used children or elderly patients if the benefits outweigh the benefits.
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) should only ever be used as prescribed by your physician. Never self-medicate or adjust your dosage unless advised to do so by a medical professional. As with all antibiotic treatments it is essential that the entire course of medication is completed even if the infection has disappeared. Not completing the full course of medication can result in a serious relapse of the infection.
The typical dose prescribed is 2 tablets a day, 1 taken in the morning and 1 in the evening. Try to space doses evenly as much as possible, so in this example of 2 doses per day aim to dose every 12 hours. Courses of this medication usually last approximately 10 to 14 days for infections, and approximately 5 days when being used to treat traveler`s diarrhea.
While taking Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole), report all side effects to your physician promptly. Do so as soon as possible if any persist or worsen. Possible side effects which may be experienced include:
