Apo-Amoxi

Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) is used to treat bacterial infections caused by organisms which are susceptible to its active ingredient. It is a beta lactam antibiotic which exhibits its mechanism of action by inhibiting the process in which bacterial cell walls are synthesized. This is achieved by affecting the bonds needed to maintain the integrity of the cell walls, which causes holes in these bacterial cell walls, thereby eliminating the bacteria. It has a considerably broad spectrum of activity against many gram negative and positive bacteria that can cause infections.

However it can be degraded by beta-lactamases, meaning that it may not be affective against some resistant micro-organisms. Indications include ear, throat and nose infections, infections occurring in the genitourinary tract or the lower respiratory tract, gonorrhea, skin infections, treatment of helicobacteri pylori and as a prophylaxis for endocarditis. Other conditions may also be treated with it as deemed necessary by your physician. The main ingredient in this medicine is sometimes spelled amoxicillin.

Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) comes in capsule form, of which there are 250mg and 500mg strength varieties available. The dosage must be individualized by the physician in charge of treatment. Adults being treated for skin infections, infections of the upper respiratory tract or the genito-urinary tract may be instructed to administer a single 250mg capsule every 8 hours. However, if the symptoms are severe, the physician may recommend a dosage of 500mg every 8 hours. The duration of treatment can vary, and patients will be required to continue treatment for the entire period of time prescribed by the physician.

If you notice any signs of side effects during treatment with Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) capsules, notify your physician. Examples can include:

• Diarrhea
• Black tongue
• Mild headache
• Vomiting and nausea
• Painful sensation in the stomach

Although mild side effects are generally more common, severe adverse events may also occur. You will need medical assistance immediately if you notice itchy purple patches on the skin, sore joints, bloody diarrhea, discoloration of urine, weakness or any other severe side effects not referenced here.

Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) is generally taken for the entire duration of treatment, even if the symptoms appear to get better unless the physician in charge of treatment directs the patient to stop administering it.

Your physician may require regular blood tests during treatment with this antibiotic medication, as well as tests on the function of the kidneys or liver. Ensure that you attend all medical appointments.
