Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) relieves depression symptoms by affecting various neurotransmitters systems in the brain and inhibiting the uptake of the substance norepinephrine. It is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant, and acts on the nerve endings in the brain. Blocking norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake helps to improve the positive effect that these substances have on mood, which can ameliorate major depressive disorder symptoms. Physicians have also treated patients with it for bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) and it has been studied for other potential uses, such as migraines, ADHD, panic attacks and other conditions not listed here.
Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) tablets are taken by mouth. It is available as either 10mg or 25mg strength tablets. Patients undergoing treatment for depression may be instructed by their physician to begin with 75mg per day (possible as 3 to 4 different divided doses). Some adjustments to the daily dosage may be made by the physician in charge of treatment and patients must comply with the instructions given by their physician.
Patients undergoing treatment with the tricyclic antidepressant Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) might suffer from side effects. Tell your physician if this happens. Some examples are provided here:
Patients should also note that serious reactions have occurred. Attend the emergency room or see your physician right away if you suffer from hallucinations, abnormal behaviour, seizures, problems walking, shaking that you are not able to control or any other severe reactions that have not been referenced here.
Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) may trigger a deterioration of symptoms in a small number of patients. Suicidal ideation or thoughts of self harm are also possible. See your physician immediately if this happens.
Regularly visit your physician for medical checkups and to ensure that treatment is having its desired effects.
