Serenace (Haloperidol) is a butyropherone derivative with antipsychotic properties that has been considered particularly effective in the management of hyperactivity, agitation, and mania. It is used in the management of manifestations of acute and chronic psychosis, including schizophrenia and manic states. It may also be of value in the management of aggressive and agitated behavior in patients with chronic brain syndrome and mental retardation and in the symptomatic control of Gilles de la Tourette`s syndrome.
Dosage is usually 1, 2 mg of Serenace (Haloperidol) taken 2 or 3 times daily, initially, followed by upward adjustment as tolerated until the desired effect is achieved or limiting side effects appear. Take as your physician has directed.
Some side effects of Serenace (Haloperidol) that can occur are headache, vertigo, cerebral seizures, insomnia, lethargy, stupor and catalepsy, confusion, restlessness, agitation, anxiety, euphoria, exacerbation of psychotic symptoms including hallucinations, tachycardia, hypertension, dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary reention, incontinence, diaphoresis, priapism, anemia, lactation, breast enlargement, mastalgia, menstrual irregularities, impotence, increased libido, changes in blood sugar concentrations, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, weight loss, constipation, diarrhoea, alopecia. If you experience other side effects, tell your physician immediately.
Discuss with your physician before taking this medication if you have a history of heart, kidney, or liver problems. Also if you have a history of epilepsy. If Serenace (Haloperidol) is taken for a prolonged period of time have regular checkups with your physician on cholesterol levels, skin and eye changes. When taken for a long period of time the risk of Tardive Dyskinesias is increased. Advise your physician off all prescription and non-prescription medication you have been taking. This drug may interact badly with other medications.
