Neulactil (Pericyazine) is an antipsychotic medication which is classified as a phenothiazine. It is indicated for schizophrenia or to manage anxiety on a short term basis. This medicine works by affecting dopamine activity and is said to have neuroleptic properties. When administered, it acts directly in the brain and blocks the dopamine receptors. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which is involved in the transmission of brain signals that control the mood and feelings. Preventing excessive dopamine activity helps to control schizophrenia and can also relieve acute confrontational states and aggressive agitation.
Neulactil (Pericyazine) comes in 2.5mg strength tablets which are administered via the oral route. The dosage for schizophrenia may differ to that needed for treating impulsive or aggressive behavior. You will be given clear and unambiguous dosage instructions by your physician, which will include details related to the required daily dosage and frequency of administration. Never exceed the daily dosage that your physician tells you to take, as this could put you at risk of serious reactions.
Patients who are taking Neulactil (Pericyazine) could suffer from side effects. Consult your physician if this happens. Some possible reactions are listed here:
The list of side effects provided above does not contain all of the possible side effects, and other unlisted reactions may also occur. Attend the emergency room or visit your physician straight away if you notice redness and inflammation on the legs, mouth ulcers, an erection which does not go away, muscle stiffness, confusion or any other severe reactions that have not been referenced here.
Neulactil (Pericyazine) has been known to trigger agranulocytosis or leukopenia in a small number of those treated with it. Ask your physician about the risk of this before beginning treatment.
Taking this medicine could slow down your reactions, which may affect your ability to drive. There is also a risk that some patients may experience suicidal thoughts. Go to see your physician straight away if this happens.
