Sebazole Shampoo (Econazole Nitrate/Sulphur as Sodium Thiosulphate/Sodium Salicylate/Chloroxylenol) is a topical treatment for cats and dogs which is used for seborrhea and dermatitis that is accompanied by dermatological infections. Its mechanism of action involves targeting bacteria and yeasts so as to treat the infection. Crusting on the skin is also healed. This veterinary shampoo is a combination of 4 separate ingredients, each of which acts in its own unique way to treat seborrheic dermatitis in pets.
Bacterial or fungal skin infections such as ringworm can often complicate skin conditions like seborrhea, making them difficult to treat. Econazole nitrate is an antifungal agent which acts directly against the fungi and blocks their ability to spread. It is active against dermatophytes (types of fungi which are often responsible for skin infections), yeasts such as malassezia and is even effective against gram positive bacteria. Chloroxylenol is also added, as it is a potent antimicrobial agent. Its antiseptic properties help to destroy both gram positive and gram negative bacteria on the skin.
The addition of sulphur and another component called sodium salicylate help to treat crusting and scaling on the skin, both of which are common features of seborrheic dermatitis. These two ingredients work as keratolytic agents, meaning that they work directly on the skin and cause keratin to become softer. This results in an exfoliating effect on the skin cells, causing the hard patches of skin to soften, allowing for them to be eventually shed. In addition to this, the two active ingredients also help speed up the healing process by functioning as keratoplastic agents, allowing for new skin to grow. Pruritis is also relieved. Because of the aforementioned benefits, many animals have been treated with this shampoo for flaky, itchy and crusty skin.
Before using Sebazole Shampoo (Econazole Nitrate/Sulphur as Sodium Thiosulphate/Sodium Salicylate/Chloroxylenol) on your animal, wet its hair and skin using warm water. Apply the shampoo and spread it evenly and thoroughly, while also massaging into a lather. Following this, the shampoo should be rinsed clean and re-applied. However, for the second application, you should allow the shampoo to stay on the coat for 5 to 10 minutes, after which it may be rinsed away. The veterinarian will tell you how often you need to apply it.
Sebazole Shampoo (Econazole Nitrate/Sulphur as Sodium Thiosulphate/Sodium Salicylate/Chloroxylenol) is generally considered safe if the veterinarian`s instructions are adhered to. Should your cat or dog show signs of side effects, take it to a veterinarian straight away.
