Renalzin

Renalzin (Lanthanum Carbonate) is a supplement for cats designed to work as a phosphate binder, so as to lessen the amount of phosphorus that the animal absorbs from any food consumed. It is indicated to help support the renal function in cats with CKD (chronic kidney disease), a condition that can cause scar tissue to form on the kidneys, leading to a reduction in the ability of the kidneys to function properly. As a result of this, toxins and minerals that would normally be removed by healthy kidneys may build up in the body, leading to a range of serious health problems.

Symptoms include increased sleep, loss of weight and a poor appetite. When administered, the active component in this supplement acts in the animal`s gastro-intestinal tract and binds to the phosphorus present there. This stops the phosphorus from entering the bloodstream, thereby helping to manage the phosphorus levels and prevent hyperphosphatemia. After ingestion, the main ingredient does not enter the bloodstream, and instead is released in the feces. Other ingredients include the recommended daily vitamin E dose and a type of toxin binder called kaolin.

If a veterinarian recommends using Renalzin (Lanthanum Carbonate) to manage or treat your cat for chronic kidney disease, it must only be given to the animal in accordance with the instructions provided to you. This product comes as an oral solution, and owners may choose between a 50ml or 150ml container. It is possible to mix the supplement with the cat`s food or else to place it straight onto it. If the veterinarian has recommended a specialist diet which is low in phosphorus, it may also be given with this. Vets normally tell cat owners to administer 2ml, either once or twice per day, based on the cat`s eating habits.
