Progestogel (Progesteron) is indicated for breast pain (mastodynia) and tenderness in females. Its mechanism of action is affecting the action of estrogens on breast tissue. The active ingredient in this gel is a female hormone which is important for a number of functions in the body. Cyclic mastalgia is a form of breast pain which affects a great deal of women, causing significant discomfort. This gel is applied topically so as to treat pain and relieve tenderness of the breasts caused by this condition.
Upon application, it starts to work by causing an increase in the amount of progesterone in the tissues around the breast. It stimulates the production of estrone sulfotransferase and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (enzymes that can oxidize the hormone estradiol). This helps to reduce the action of estrogens (types of hormones). It also helps prevent fluid retention in certain parts of the breasts. Symptoms such as pain and swelling can therefore be reduced, allowing for an improvement in the patient`s condition.
Progestogel (Progesteron) gel is administered locally. Consult your physician so that the dosage schedule can be carefully calculated and the suitability of this form of treatment assessed. Physicians generally direct adult women to apply 2.5g of the gel to the skin of each breast (totaling 5g) once per day. It is normally used from day 10 to 25 of the cycle. Regular medical examinations will be ordered by your physician so that your condition can be monitored and the suitability of continuing treatment assessed. Do not use the gel for longer than your physician recommends.

Progestogel (Progesteron) is indicated for application to the skin of the breasts only. It is not for use on any other parts of the body. Under no circumstances should it be swallowed.
