Pro-Banthine (Propantheline) is used to treat stomach cramps or stomach spasms, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), enuresis (involutary urination). It is also used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. This medicine is an antimuscarinic agent that works be relaxing smooth (involuntary) muscles. It is also used to treat peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal) and gastritis.
This medicine works by blocking acetylcholine. Acetylcholine binds with muscurinic receptors in smooth muscle causing involuntary contraction of the muscle. For example, in the stomach, gut or intestine when you have stomach cramps, or in the bladder causing urination. By blocking the binding of acetylcholine, it helps to keep these muscles relaxed.
