Nizoral Shampoo (Ketoconazole) is an antidandruff shampoo. The active ingredient inhibits the growth of yeast and other fungal infections. It also is known to assist in the regrowth of hair for men suffering from male pattern hair loss and is therefore popular with use in conjunction with other baldness medications.
Its effect on the scalp is long lasting and even after being rinsed off, its active ingredient keeps working for several days. This means that it does not have to be used every day, making it cost effective.
Use Nizoral Shampoo (Ketoconazole) twice weekly for 2 to 4 weeks the once every 1 to 2 weeks. Apply to wet hair and scalp and leave in contact 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Nizoral Shampoo (Ketoconazole) causes minimal skin and scalp irritation. The adverse effects reported by patients consisted mainly of greasy hair or scalp, dry (brittle) hair or scalp, irritation, burning sensation and dryness (eyebrows).
Irritation may occur when Nizoral Shampoo (Ketoconazole) is used immediately after prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids. If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation should occur, use of the shampoo should be discontinued.
Due to the teratogenic nature of the active ingredient, the use of the shampoo is not recommended in pregnant or nursing women except under the advice of a physician. Clinical data on the use of this shampoo in children under 12 are not available; therefore, such use is not recommended except under the advice of a physician.
