Leventa (Levothyroxine Sodium) is indicated for the treatment and management of canine hypothyroidism. Dogs affected by this disorder produce insufficient quantities of the thyroid hormone, which can result in symptoms such as lethargy, weigh gain, sensitivity to cold temperatures, loss of hair and darkening of the skin. Decreased thyroid hormone production is usually caused by conditions such as lymphocyctic thyroiditis or idiopathic atrophy.
Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism may be similar to that of aging, a vet will need to conduct medical tests to confirm that the animal is suffering from this condition. This may involve blood tests. Although there is no cure for hypothyroidism, it can be managed with medicines such as this one. Treatment with this oral solution is known as hormonal replacement, and it aims to control symptoms by replacing the lack of thyroid hormone with a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone.
After the vet diagnoses your dog with hypothyroidism, an appropriate dosage of Leventa (Levothyroxine Sodium) will be prescribed. This solution comes with an oral dosing syringe, to allow pet owners to measure the correct dosage. It may be administered directly into the dog`s mouth or mixed into its food. Owners should only give their dog the amount of medicine prescribed by the vet, and it is also important the dosage is administered at the same time each day.
In general, dogs who are given Leventa (Levothyroxine Sodium) to treat hypothyroidism do not exhibit signs of side effects. If you notice that your dog has become sick, take it to see a vet as soon as possible.
This medicine is only for use in animals.
Monitoring of your dog may be required by the vet during treatment, and blood tests may be necessary.
