Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) is used in adults with epilepsy to control a type of seizure called partial seizures. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your physician or pharmacist for more information. It is used in adults to treat other types of seizures called tonic-clonic, absence, atypical absence, and myoclonic. It may be used in infants and children to treat a condition called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Talk to your physician about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.
Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is taken two times a day at evenly spaced intervals. Follow the directions on the label carefully, and ask your physician or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take it exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your physician.
Continue to take this medicine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without talking to your physician, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your physician probably will decrease your dose gradually. Abruptly stopping the drug can cause seizures.
Although side effects from Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) are not common, they can occur. Tell your physician if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: drowsiness, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in balance, loss of taste and appetite, headache, irritability, insomnia. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your physician immediately: rash, redness of skin, swelling.
Tell your physician if you have or have ever had heart, kidney, or liver disease or a blood disorder; tell your physician if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine), call your physician.
If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the physician or dentist that you are taking Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine).
You should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you; remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
Plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Lamitor DT (Lamotrigine) may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.
