Foratec Rotacaps (Formoterol Fumarate) is indicated for the treatment of asthma. Its mechanism of action is widening up the airways and helping them to remain open. This can improve breathing and help prevent bronchospasms from occurring. It has also been used for patients suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), including bronchitis and emphysema. Medicines which are classified as long acting beta2 adrenergic agonists, (such as the active ingredient in this medicine) work on the beta 2 receptors directly in the lungs. By stimulating these receptors, it causes muscular relaxation and significant bronchodilation. The effects can persist for as long as 12 hours, and in some cases physicians have used it to prevent symptoms of nocturnal (night-time) asthma.
Foratec Rotacaps (Formoterol Fumarate) is contained in capsules, which are inserted into a rotahaler or revolizer device so that their contents can be inhaled. Each capsule contains 12mcg of the active ingredient. Your physician will calculate the required daily dosage schedule according to your individual circumstances. Patients with asthma may be told to take another long term medicine for the control of their asthma (possibly an inhalable corticosteroid). Generally, physicians will direct adults treating asthma to inhale 1 capsule every 12 hours alongside their long term maintenance medicine. Physicians may also instruct adults with COPD being treated for bronchoconstriction to administer the same dose, however if used to prevent exercise induced bronchospasms, the physician will most likely order the patient to use it 15 minutes prior to beginning exercise. Never use more than your physician recommends.
Should you experience any side effects after inhalation of Foratec Rotacaps (Formoterol Fumarate) it will be necessary to notify the physician providing treatment. Reactions which may occur include:
Other side effects are also possible. You will require medical attention immediately if you are affected by seizures, breathing difficulties which occur after you have administered this medicine, a deterioration of your asthma, thirst, increased urination or any other serious adverse events not referenced in this paragraph.
The active ingredient in Foratec Rotacaps (Formoterol Fumarate) is classified as a LABA (long acting beta2 adrenergic agonist), and these types of medications have been associated with an increased risk of asthma related death. It should only be used if your physician deems it necessary and you will require regular medical checkups so that the need for treatment can be re-evaluated. When your symptoms are controlled, the physician may decide to reduce or decrease treatment with this medicine.
This medicine comes in the form of capsules which are inhaled. You must not swallow or otherwise ingest them. They should always be used with one of the inhalation devices listed above. Ask your physician if you are unsure of the proper way to use it.
