Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon Hydrochloride) is a potentially life-saving treatment used to treat severe hypoglycemic reactions (low blood sugar) for patients who are diabetic and insulin dependent. It was developed for immediate relief during emergency situations to help reduce risks of brain damage or even death from acute hypoglycemia.
The kit contains a pre-filled syringe containing sterile water, and a vial of glucagon powder, as well as full instructions for how to mix the two and administer.
Your physician or physician will demonstrate how to use Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon Hydrochloride) properly. As hypoglycemia can incapacitate you, it is important you then educate your family and friends in case it is necessary for them to administer the syringe.
The dosage of glucagon to be used will vary patient to patient, and it is therefore essential you follow the instructions provided by your physician. Dose can vary depending on weight, and some patients will require a second injection 15 minutes after the first. Check with your physician for the correct dosage you would require.
The two substances should only be mixed immediately before administering the injection. Mixing the water and the powder in advance will result in the glucagon being ineffective when used.
The most commonly reported side effects of Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon Hydrochloride) include feeling dizzy, disorientated, or having problems breathing. Normally these should be safe and disappear quite quickly, but if they persist, or worsen, you should inform your physician.
Serious symptoms which require immediate medical attention include diarrhea, muscle cramps, weak limbs, nausea or vomiting, a change in heart beat, or a loss of appetite.
Ensure the Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon Hydrochloride) you have ready for use has not expired. Replace the kit with a new one if it is unused and has expired.
If you suspect you are suffering from hypoglycemia, do not drive, or participate in any activities which require concentration and may be dangerous. For a period after you have been treated using this medicine, your hand-eye coordination may be impaired, so you should also avoid these activities until you are absolutely certain you have recovered.
