Onglyza (Saxagliptin) is a medication prescribed to patients with Type 2 diabetes. It works by lowering high blood sugar levels by prompting the pancreas to release more insulin into your blood stream. It also stops the liver from producing too much sugar when you have too much in your bloodstream.
How much you take and how often will depend on the strength of the Onglyza (Saxagliptin) and your medical condition. Take strictly as directed by your physician.
Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting your physician, even if you are feeling better. If you do, your symptoms may worsen and risk the onset of unwanted side effects.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.
As with all medications, Onglyza (Saxagliptin) has the potential to cause side effects in some patients. Common side effects include weakness, vomiting, a runny nose, redness of the skin, hives, shortness of breath, rashes, itching, wheezing, diarrhea, trouble breathing, and loss of appetite. If these symptoms get worse or do not go away, contact your physician.
Less common side effects of Onglyza include unexplained rapid weight gain, nervousness, lower back pain, depression, cold sweats, blurry vision, dizziness, cough, bloody urine, pale skin, chills, coma, nightmares, increased hunger, bladder pain, ear or chest congestion. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your physician immediately or seek emergency medical treatment.
Do not take Onglyza (Saxagliptin) if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients.
Tell your physician if you have allergies to any other medication, dyes, food, preservatives, or any other substances, if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, and what other prescription, non-prescription, or herbal and dietary supplements you are taking.
This medicine may cause dizziness when you first start taking it. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive a motor vehicle until you know how this medication affects you.
Tell your physician if you have diabetes, kidney disease, fever, an infection, recently had surgery or a trauma event.
