Ethics Enalapril (Enalapril Maleate) is an ACE inhibitor which is indicated as a medical treatment for hypertension, diabetic nephropathy and heart failure. This medicine is a type of prodrug, which means that it is converted to its active form after being ingested. Its method of action involves preventing the action of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), thereby leading to a decrease in the amount of angiotensin II being produced.
Angiotensin II is produced naturally in the body and has many effects on the cardiovascular system, including vasoconstriction (making the blood vessels narrower). This in turn can contribute to an increase in blood pressure. The reduced amount of angiotensin II produced as a result of taking this medicine helps contribute to the relaxation of the blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure.
Patients with diabetic nephropathy (damaged caused to the kidneys as a result of diabetes) are also treated with this medicine for its antiproteinuric properties, so as to lessen the rate at which the function of the kidneys deteriorates in those affected by this condition.
Ethics Enalapril (Enalapril Maleate) is taken by mouth. This medicine is available as either 5mg or 10mg strength tablets. Adult patients taking this medicine for diabetic nephropathy or hypertension may be told by their physician to start with 5mg, administered once per day. This may be adjusted for maintenance treatment and it is possible that the patient will be directed to take 10mg to 40mg per day, taken as 1 to 2 divided doses. However, it is worth noting that this could vary slightly depending on the individual circumstances of the patient.
Adults affected by congestive heart failure are often directed by their physician to administer 2.5mg once each day. This may be increased for maintenance treatment and a dosage ranging from 2.5mg to 20mg used for maintenance treatment. All patients should note that the dosage can often differ for each individual, and it is essential that the instructions given by the physician are strictly followed at all times.
Patients taking Ethics Enalapril (Enalapril Maleate) should note that some side effects can occur, such as:
Your physician should be informed if you are bothered by any side effects. Hospitalization will be needed immediately if you experience fever, a reduction in urination, unusual bleeding or any other serious side effects which have not been listed here.
Regular medical tests may be requested by your physician during treatment, so that your condition can be carefully monitored.
This medicine is not to be used by anyone who is pregnant due to the risk of severe harm to the unborn baby.
