Bezalip Retard (Bezafibrate) is classified as a fibrate and it is used to lower lipid (fat) levels in the blood. It works by reducing the levels of certain types of fats in the blood, such as triglycerides and cholesterol. This helps to protect against some of the health problems that can occur due to high cholesterol, including heart disease. Atherosclerosis (hardened arteries) may also occur due to excess triglycerides. When administered, this medicine helps to stimulate the action of enzymes in the liver called lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase, which in turn helps to trigger the breakdown of triglycerides and reduce blood triglyceride levels.
Bezalip Retard (Bezafibrate) tablets are to be swallowed whole together with a glass of water. It may be taken with food or else after eating. Your physician will carefully assess your circumstances and decide on the most appropriate daily dosage. Adults taking this medicine are usually directed by their physician to administer 1 tablet per day. However, this may not apply for all patients, and it is possible that an alternative dosage schedule may be recommended by your physician. Never take more than the recommended dosage.
If you notice any signs of side effects during the course of treatment with Bezalip Retard (Bezafibrate) tablets, ensure that you notify your physician. Possible reactions can include:
Other more serious side effects can occur in patients treated with this medication. Get emergency medical care if you suffer from severe skin burns, extreme fatigue, blood problems, gallstones, bruises on the skin or any other severe adverse events which have not been referenced here.
Bezalip Retard (Bezafibrate) may cause a serious condition which causes the breakdown of the muscles (rhabdomyolysis). If you notice inflammation or pain affecting the muscles, see your physician immediately.
In addition to treatment with this medicine, your physician may recommend that you follow a carefully planned diet and exercise regime, so as to ensure that your triglyceride levels can be effectively reduced.
This medication should not be taken by patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may also not be suitable for those suffering from certain medical conditions. Discuss this in detail with your physician before the commencement of treatment.
