Amitrip

Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) is classified as a TCA (tricyclic antidepressant) which works in the brain by potentiating and prolonging the action of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. This is achieved by affecting the mechanism which causes the reuptake of neurotransmitters in both the serotonergic and adrenergic neurons. As a result of this antidepressant activity and mood lightening effects, the symptoms of depression can be relieved. Due to the medicine`s sedative effects, physicians may also use it to treat cases of depression in which the patient is agitated. It has also been studied for migraine prophylaxis, nerve pain, fibromyalgia, enuresis, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions.

Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) is available as film coated tablets of which there are 25mg and 50mg strength versions available. The dosage will be individualized by the physician so as to meet the individual requirements of each patient. Adults undergoing treatment for depression may be told by their physician to start out with between 25mg and 100mg daily (administered as 3 to 4 separate doses) or as an alternative to this, they may be directed to take 50mg to 100mg just before bed.

Any adjustments to the dosage schedule will only be made by the physician in charge of treatment, and will be done on a gradual basis. The dosage for pain disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, migraine prevention or any other condition is normally different to those listed above, and it will be necessary to follow the dosage regimen that your physician calculates for you.

Patients taking the tricyclic antidepressant medicine Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) should inform their physician if any side effects occur. Examples may include:

• Impotence
• Perspiring excessively
• Drowsiness or a dizzy sensation
• Alterations in body weight or appetite
• Swelling of the breasts affecting male or female patients

There are also other possible reactions that could be experienced by patients during treatment. You will need to get emergency medical assistance as soon as possible if you suffer from seizures, hallucinations, eyesight problems, uncontrollable or abnormal eye or body movements, spots underneath the skin or any other serious side effects which have not been referenced in this paragraph.

Patients undergoing treatment with Amitrip (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) will be instructed by their physician not to consume alcoholic beverages during treatment. This is especially important, as alcohol could increase the risk of side effects, leading to increased dizziness and a drowsy feeling.

Patients who are treated with antidepressants are more likely to think about suicide when starting treatment with antidepressant medications such as this one, especially younger patients (25 years of age or less). Your physician will wish to monitor you regularly during the first 12 weeks of treatment, and possibly for longer.
