Zevert (Betahistine) treats vertigo, tinnitus and other symptoms of Meniere`s disease by affecting the flow of blood to the inner ear. This anti-vertigo medicine is classified as a histamine analog, meaning that it bears a close resemblance to the natural chemical histamine. Meniere`s disease is a debilitating vestibular disorder affecting the inner ear, causing symptoms such as vertigo, nausea, hearing difficulties, tinnitus and a loss of balance. These are brought on due to a buildup of a fluid (known as endolymph) in the ear, resulting in inner ear pressure. Symptoms may occur suddenly and without warning, causing significant discomfort.
This medicine is said to have weak agonist action against the H1 histamine receptors, but stronger H3 receptor antagonist action. Many experts have stated that it affects the histamine receptors in the blood vessels of the inner, causing these vessels to dilate. This results in a reduction of the pressure that the excess fluid in the ear causes, thereby alleviating the symptoms of Meniere`s disease. Other leading research experts have hypothesized that its mechanism of action may also involve affecting the central nervous system and various neuronal systems. It has even been studied for its effects if used for motion sickness.
Zevert (Betahistine) comes as uncoated dispersible tablets which contain 16mg of the active ingredient. Adult patients are sometimes directed by their physician to begin treatment with 16mg (one tablet) administered 3 times each day. Following this, the physician may decide to adjust the dosage and instruct the patient to take a daily dosage which may range from 24mg to 48mg per day, given as 3 separate divided doses. This means that the dosage will either be reduced or else continued as before. It is essential that patients do not exceed the dosage that their physician determines for them, as this is considered extremely hazardous.
As a result of taking Zevert (Betahistine) tablets, patients may experience:
All details relating to the side effects experienced must be reported to the physician in charge of treatment. Medical treatment with this medication also carries with it a slight risk of significantly more harmful and serious reactions. You will be required to attend the emergency room or consult your physician immediately if this happens.
Zevert (Betahistine) is not to be used in patients who have a pheochromocytoma (a type of neuroendocrine tumor affecting the adrenal gland).
Meniere`s disease can affect your ability to drive or safely operate machinery. Talk to your physician about this before beginning treatment.
