Visanne

Visanne (Dienogest) is indicated for endometriosis. Its therapeutic benefits are achieved by relieving pain and reducing endometriotic lesions. Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, resulting in symptoms such as an inflammatory reaction, dysmenorrhea and premenstrual pain. Although the exact causes of this condition are not fully understood, experts have stated that high estrogen levels can worsen the condition.

This medicine is classified as a progestin and is believed to work in a number of ways. Its mechanism of action involves stopping the secretion of gonadtropins (types of hormones), which in turn has a hypoestrogenic effect, resulting in the decidulization of the endometrial tissue. This in turn has an atrophic effect on the lesions. Medical experts have also hypothesized that it may directly decrease the blood estradiol levels, which may further explain its effects.

In contrast with other medicines, this drug does not exhibit any significant androgenic effect, but it does have antiandrogenic properties, meaning that its effects on carbohydrate levels are minimized. Treatment with this medicine can help to relieve the pain associated with endometriosis while also helping to reduce the growth of endometrium-like tissue. It is generally used on an ongoing basis so as to control the symptoms and provide the maximum benefits to the patient.

Visanne (Dienogest) is provided in tablet form. After assessing your symptoms, your physician will be able to provide dosage instructions. Females taking this medicine are normally told to take a single 2mg tablet per day. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and physicians normally advise administering it at the same time each day. Patients may take the tablet with food or else without it, however it is important not to miss any doses.

Patients taking Visanne (Dienogest) tablets could experience side effects. Tell your physician if this happens. A list of some examples is given here:

• Hot flashes
• Loss of hair
• Discomfort in the stomach
• Soreness which is noticeable in the back
• Mood changes, anxiety and difficulty sleeping

The list of side effects given here is not complete and patients should take note of the fact that other reactions may also be experienced. Consult your physician immediately if you experience inflammation or soreness in the leg, abnormal bleeding from the vagina, a lump on the breast or any other serious side effects that have not been referenced here.

Contraceptive pills are not used in patients undergoing treatment with Visanne (Dienogest) tablets. Your physician will most likely recommend the use of barrier contraception.

Smoking cigarettes during treatment with this medicine might place the patient at an increased risk of severe and dangerous reactions affecting the blood vessels. Patients will most likely be told to stop smoking.
