Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is used for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) and other cancers. It works by blocking the abnormal protein needed for the cancer to spread. In patients with CML, the presence of a chromosome referred to as the Philadelphia chromosome can affect the blood cells, causing them to synthesize an abnormal protein (Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinsase).
The active compound contained in this drug is known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. A key step in its mechanism of action when used for CML is the ability to inhibit the bcr-abl tyrosine kinase from triggering the phosphorylation of proteins, which is required for the cancer cells to develop. This in turn causes the destruction of the cancerous cells, allowing for the treatment of symptoms. It is generally used in cases when bone marrow transplants are not considered as the primary treatment option.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are treated because of the medicine`s ability to inhibit the mutant PDGFRA or KIT gene, which causes the death of abnormal cells. Other indications include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative disorders, chronic eosinophilic leukemia, hypereosinophilic syndrome, DFSP (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans) as well as other disorders that have not been referenced here.
The medicine content of Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is 100mg per capsule. Administration is by means of the oral route. A dosage regimen will need to be individualized for each patient, and the primary factor that the physician will consider is the condition being treated. The adult dosage for CML (in the chronic phase) is generally 400mg, administered once daily. For the accelerated phase, the physician may instruct the patient to take 600mg per day.
In cases of disease progression, the absence of an effective hematologic or cytogenic response, and certain other circumstances, the physician may decide to adjust the dosage. The adult dosage for Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia, systemic mastocytosis and any other condition it is used for may differ. Every patient will need to listen carefully to the dosage instructions that their physician provides them with. Physicians generally direct patients to take it alongside a full glass of water and a meal (but not on an empty stomach).
Aside from the therapeutic effects, Veenat 100 (Imatinib) treatment can result in patients suffering from side effects, including:
Patients are required to keep in regular contact with their physician and to report all side effects, in case medical attention is needed. Severe reactions are also possible. Consult your physician or present yourself at the emergency room immediately if you experience urine that contains blood, bleeding from the gums or elsewhere, vocal disturbances, body weight increases, pain in the lower back or any other side effects that are serious in nature and have not been referenced here.
Veenat 100 (Imatinib) has been known to cause cytopenias (blood cell reduction). Should this occur, medical attention will be needed, as the physician may need to adjust the dosage. Rare cases may even necessitate the cessation of treatment.
There have also been reports of gastrointestinal perforations in patients treated with this medicine. In addition to this, pregnant females may not be treated with it.
