Temaril-P (Trimeprazine/Prednisolone) works in 3 ways to relieve itching, inflammation and coughing. Its mechanism of action is acting on the H1 histamine receptors while also inhibiting the release of substances responsible for triggering inflammation. In addition to antipruritic and anti-inflammatory effects, this product can also act as an antitussive (cough relieving medicine). For this reason, it is often used to treat kennel cough, bronchitis, tracheobronchitis and other types of cough affecting dogs.
Severe itching caused by skin conditions related to allergies or inflammation (including allergies, eczema, nonspecific dermatitis, parasitic dermatitis, pustular dermatitis and others) can be relieved, and it is also able to work for pruritis and swelling due to otitis. Combining the action of a corticosteroid and an antihistamine may also mean that a less than normal corticosteroid dosage can be given. It is worth noting that this medicine will not eliminate bacteria or treat infections, and other forms of medicine may also be recommended by the veterinarian.
Temaril-P (Trimeprazine/Prednisolone) tablets can be given directly to your dog. The veterinarian will determine the dosage according to the weight of the dog. For the initial dosage, the veterinarian may require that dogs weighing up to 10 lbs be given half a tablet twice per day, dogs weighing 11 lbs to 20 lbs are usually treated with 1 tablet twice per day, dogs in the 21 lbs to 40 lbs weight range are often given 2 tablets twice per day, and heavier dogs (40 pounds and over) are given 3 tablets twice per day. The dosage may then be reduced by the veterinarian (usually to half of the original dosage) 4 days after starting treatment. Only give your dog the amount of medicine recommended by the veterinarian.
If your dog shows any signs of sickness or side effects during the course of treatment with Temaril-P (Trimeprazine/Prednisolone) tablets, take it to the veterinarian. Some side effects which may occur are listed here:
