Relpax (Eletriptan) is used for the treatment of migraine in adult patients. It is in a class of drugs known as serotonin agonists, however, it is commonly referred to as a triptan. Patients affected by migraine may experience a severely painful, throbbing headache, either on one or both sides of the head. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Certain patients may also notice flashing lights (called aura). This medicine aims to treat these symptoms by reducing the swelling of blood vessels in the brain, and by blocking the release of substances which can cause migraine symptoms.
Relpax (Eletriptan) comes as tablets, which are taken by mouth. You will have to visit your physician before starting treatment, to determine if this medicine is suitable for you. In addition to this, your physician will tell you the correct dosage to take. These tablets contain 40mg of the active ingredient. Certain patients may be told by their physician to take a tablet at the first signs of a migraine. If the symptoms improve but return after 2 hours, your physician may tell you to take a second tablet. However, if the first dose does not help your symptoms, you should consult your physician before taking a second tablet. Patients are usually told not to take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours.
Possible side effects of Relpax (Eletriptan) include:
If you experience pale or blue colored toes or fingers, a burning or tingling sensation affecting the feet or hands, diarrhea that is bloody, speech difficulties, visual disturbances or any other symptoms indicative of a serious reaction, you should immediately consult your physician.
Drowsiness may occur after taking this medication. Patients should not drive or operate dangerous machinery unless they are sure that it is safe to do so.
This medicine is not used to treat basilar or hemiplegic migraine, or headaches occurring as a result of other medical conditions.
