Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus Monohydrate) is used to treat a skin disease known as eczema (sometimes referred to as atopic dermatitis), and the symptoms this condition causes, such as dry and itchy skin, rashes and inflammation. The active ingredient in this topical ointment belongs to a class of medicines known as calcineurin inhibitors. It works by causing a decrease in cell activity in the immune system, thereby helping to slow the spread of eczema. In some cases, this ointment has been used as a treatment for vitiligo.
You must consult your physician before using Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus Monohydrate). This is so that you can be properly instructed on the correct application procedure. Adults treating eczema are often instructed to apply the ointment to the area of skin affected by eczema (and not to any other area of skin). Treatment may be continued for short period of time, and in some cases, patients are told to repeat treatment, with breaks in the treatment schedule taken in between. You may be instructed by your physician to stop treatment when your eczema symptoms disappear.
Patients using Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus Monohydrate) may notice some side effects, and a list of examples is provided here:
Notify your physician of any side effects that concern you. If you notice any signs of a severe reaction, you must consult your physician immediately. Examples include severe pain at the application site, signs of infection, blisters, swollen glands and cold sores. Other serious side effects which have not been listed here may also occur.
Patients with a rare skin condition known as Netherton`s syndrome, a weaker than normal immune system or certain other skin conditions may be told not to use this ointment.
It has been reported that a small number of patients treated with this ointment have been affected by lymphoma or skin cancer. Medical experts are unsure whether or not these conditions were caused by the ointment. You are advised to discuss the risks of treatment with your physician before using this medicine.
