Penvir (Famciclovir) is an antiviral medication, which is used to treat genital herpes outbreaks, shingles (herpes zoster) and cold sores. It may also be taken by patients to prevent outbreaks of genital herpes. Famciclovir works by inhibiting the action of DNA polymerase, the enzyme that the virus needs to multiply.
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, which can cause sores to appear around the anus and genitals. Taking this medicine helps to heal these sores, while also reducing pain and itching.
Penvir (Famciclovir) comes as 250mg tablets. You will need to visit your doctor so that the correct dosage can be prescribed to you. The exact dosage prescribed will be based on your medical condition, as well as other factors. Adults who are treating herpes zoster are often directed to take 500mg every 8 hours. Treatment is usually started within 48 hours after symptoms are noticed, and can last for 7 days.
Initial outbreaks of genital herpes are sometimes treated with 250mg, taken 3 times per day for a period of 7 to 10 days. Repeat outbreaks may be treated with 1000mg taken twice per day for 1 day, or else 125mg, taken twice per day for a period of 5 days. Patients preventing herpes outbreaks are often told to take 250mg twice per day, however, those with HIV may need a higher dose. It is possible that the patient will be told to take it for up to 1 year.
Treating viral infections with Penvir (Famciclovir) can sometimes cause side effects, such as:
While you are taking this medicine, it is recommended that you inform your doctor of any side effects which occur. Remember that serious side effects have sometimes been reported by patients taking this drug. See your doctor immediately if you notice hallucinations, severe pain or numbness affecting the feet or hands, unusual weight gain or any other signs of a serious reaction.
If you suffer from or have ever been affected by immune system problems, HIV, AIDS, glucose-galactose malabsorption, galactose intolerance, liver disease or any conditions affecting the kidneys, you should tell your physician before taking this medication.
Penvir (Famciclovir) will not prevent the transmission of herpes to others. Discuss with your physician ways to prevent spreading genital herpes to others.
