Glyciphage (Metformin Hydrochloride) is used to help manage type 2 diabetes and keep the patients blood glucose within their target range by helping the body produce less glucose from the liver. This medicine has been found to lower blood fat levels and possibly contribute to minor weight loss.
Take Glyciphage (Metformin Hydrochloride) with meals, once, twice or up to three times a day. Be sure to check with your physician about how often and how much to take.
The most common side effects of Glyciphage (Metformin Hydrochloride) are diarrhoea, nausea, stomach upset and symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), such as lightheadedness, dizziness, shakiness, or hunger may also occur. Serious side effects are very rare and occur mostly in people whose kidneys or liver are not working normally. The most serious side effect is lactic acidosis. It may be life threatening. Your physician will check your kidney and liver function to determine if you are at risk.
Do not take Glyciphage (Metformin Hydrochloride) if you have kidney problems, are over 80 years of age (unless your kidneys are tested), are taking medication for heart failure, are seriously dehydrated, have a severe infection, or if you have or have had liver disease.
Do not take this medicine if you drink alcohol excessively, and also if you are trying to get pregnant. Consult your physician for more information. Hypoglycemia may occur when this medicine is taken in combination with insulin or other diabetes pills.
