Okamycin (Erythromycin/Zinc Sulphate) is a topical antibiotic applied to the skin to help control acne. It may be used alone or with one or more other medicines that are applied to the skin or taken by mouth for acne. This product may also be used for other problems, such as skin infections, as determined by your physician.
Before applying Okamycin (Erythromycin/Zinc Sulphate), thoroughly wash the affected area with warm water and soap, rinse well, and pat dry. After washing or shaving, it is best to wait 30 minutes before applying the pledget (swab), topical gel, or topical liquid form. The alcohol in them may irritate freshly washed or shaved skin. This product will not cure your acne. However, to help keep your acne under control, keep using it for the full time of treatment, even if your symptoms begin to clear up after a few days.
You may have to continue using it every day for months or even longer in some cases. If you stop treatment too soon, your symptoms may return. As a rule, an 8 week treatment period will be necessary, but in instances of recurrence, the period of treatment may be prolonged further. It is important that you do not miss any doses. The dose will vary for different patients. Follow your physician`s orders or the directions on the label. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your physician tells you to do so.
Adverse effect reported with Okamycin (Erythromycin/Zinc Sulphate) therapy, include dryness, tenderness, pruritus, desquamation, erythema, oiliness and burning sensation. Irritation of the eye has also been reported. The skin irritation reported has ranged from mild to severe. A case of generalised urticaria reaction, possibly related to the drug, which required the use of systemic steroids has been reported.
Tell your physician if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Okamycin (Erythromycin/Zinc Sulphate). Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as preservatives or dyes.
This product has been tested in children 12 years of age and older and, in effective doses, has not been shown to cause different side effects or problems than it does in adults.
