Description

Uses

Mirnite Meltab (Mirtazapine) is widely used in the treatment of depression. Its mechanism of action is related to the enhancement of norepinephrine release and serotonergic transmission. This antidepressant medicine has also been the focus of a great deal of medical research aimed at further exploring potential medical uses. These include GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), panic disorder, insomnia, migraine, postoperative nausea, itching (chronic pruritis), OCD and sleep apnea.

The main ingredient contained in these tablets is classified as a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA) and it exhibits a dual mode of action. When administered, it functions as an antagonist of the adrenercid alpha2-autoreceptors, as well as the alpha2-heteroreceptors. In addition to this, it blocks the 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors. The overall effect of this is the increased activity of neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain, resulting in an improvement in the mood and a restoration of the natural chemical balance inside the brain.

Dosage and Administration

Mirnite Meltab (Mirtazapine) orally disintegrating tablets are available in 3 different strengths, including 7.5mg, 15mg and 30mg formulations. These tablets are different in that they may be placed directly into the mouth, where they can be dissolved by the saliva. Consult your physician so that you can be provided with concise and clear dosage instructions.

Generally speaking, adult patients undergoing treatment for major depressive disorder will be instructed by their physician to take 15mg per day, at night, just before bed as a starting dosage. The maintenance dosage normally ranges from 15mg to 45mg per day. Remember that withdrawal symptoms may be caused if treatment is suddenly stopped. Your physician may need to slowly reduce the dosage over a set period of time in order to avoid this.

Precautions

Your physician will order you not to administer this medication if an MAO inhibitor has been taken within the previous 14 days, due to the risk of a serious drug interaction. You might also be required to wait for a specified amount of time after finishing treatment with this medicine before an MAO inhibitor can be administered.
