Metchek (Metformin Hydrochloride) is used to control hyperglycaemia type II diabetes in cases where diet, exercise and weight loss have not worked, or in cases where insulin therapy is not appropriate.
Metchek (Metformin Hydrochloride) is often used to treat of obese diabetics and sometimes in insulin-dependent diabetics who are overweight.
Metchek (Metformin Hydrochloride) is usually used at a starting dosage of 500mg once or twice a day. Dosage can then be increased gradually as required, up to a dosage of 100mg three times a day.
Once diabetic control has been achieved, the dosage should be slowly reduced to the lowest possible dosage which can maintain diabetic control.
Metformin is sometimes prescribed alongside sulphonylurea.
The most common side effects of Metchek (Metformin Hydrochloride) generally occur when beginning treatment and are only temporary. These include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and a metallic taste.
More serious side effects are more likely to occur after a longer period of treatment or at higher doses. These include lactic acidosis; decreased vitamin B12 absorption; mild erythema, pruritus and urticaria; liver function test abnormalities or hepatitis.
Lactic Acidosis can occur, and its risk is increased at higher dosages, in elderly patients and where renal function is impaired. This is a potentially life-threatening condition.
Metchek (Metformin Hydrochloride) should be used with caution in cases of:
It is recommended that pregnant and breast-feeding women do not use metformin unless specifically advised by a doctor.
