Malarone (Proguanil Hydrochloride/Atovaquone) is a combination of two active ingredients and is considered an antimalarial medication. The medication along with protective clothing and insect repellents are used to prevent and treat malaria. It interferes with the growth and even kills malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other tissues that have entered the body through mosquito bites.
Malarone (Proguanil Hydrochloride/Atovaquone) should be taken orally once daily with a meal or glass of milk. Your dosage will depend on whether the medication is used to prevent or treat malaria, the patient`s weight and response to the treatment, contact a doctor for exact dosage. To prevent malaria, start taking the medication 1 to 2 days prior to entering a common malarial area. The medication should be continued during the duration of the stay and for at least 7 days after leaving the area.
