Loxalate (Escitalopram Oxalate) is an antidepressant which is believed to work by enhancing the activity of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This can help to relieve symptoms of depression, including low moods, a loss of interest in everyday life, appetite problems, sleep disturbances, low energy levels and negative emotions. Its active ingredient is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (often abbreviated to SSRI) and experts believe that it is able to potentiate the action of serotonin in the central nervous system by blocking serotonin reuptake. This prevents the serotonin from being reabsorbed, instead boosting its positive effects on the mood. Some research has been conducted to assess its effects if used in the treatment of premature ejaculation.
Loxalate (Escitalopram Oxalate) comes as either 10mg or 20mg strength tablets for oral administration. Adults treating depression or generalized anxiety disorder may be instructed by their physician to administer 10mg per day. If the physician in charge of treatment decides that it is needed, the dosage may be increased to 20mg per day after 1 week of treatment. In the case of anxiety and depression, the physician will regularly examine the patient to decide whether or not it is necessary to continue treatment.
Patients treating depression, anxiety or any other disorders with the SSRI antidepressant Loxalate (Escitalopram Oxalate) should report all side effects to their physician. Examples can include:
Certain side effects are serious, and will require immediate medical attention. These include hallucinations, fever, abnormal thoughts or behavior, extreme feelings of excitement, slurring of speech and various other severe adverse events which are not referenced here.
Loxalate (Escitalopram Oxalate) could trigger a serious drug reaction if it is taken in combination with an MAO inhibitor or if at the time of taking it an MAO inhibitor has been administered within the previous 14 days. A period of at least 14 days from the day you stop taking this medicine is also needed before an MAO inhibitor can be taken again. Discuss this with your physician.
Withdrawal symptoms can occur if treatment is suddenly stopped, especially if the patient has been taking it for an extended period of time. Your physician will provide specific instructions on how to minimize or avoid this, which may include gradual tapering of the dosage before complete cessation of treatment.
