Lexapro

Lexapro (Escitalopram Oxalate) is used for its therapeutic effects in the treatment of depression and anxiety (GAD). It acts on the central nervous system and increases the activity of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT). This medicine is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), and by blocking the reuptake of serotonin, it helps to ensure that the levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain are balanced, so as to help restore feelings of well being and relieving negative symptoms such as anxiety. A number of studies have taken place on this medicine, some of which focused on other potential uses, which include seasonal affective disorder and others not mentioned here.

Lexapro (Escitalopram Oxalate) tablets are available in 2 separate strengths, which are 10mg and 20mg. Dosage regimens need to be individualized, with the unique circumstances of each patient taken into account. For example, some physicians may direct their patients to begin with a dosage of 10mg per day (it should be taken in the morning or night). The physician may then direct the patient to increase the daily dosage to 20mg per day, however this will not occur in all cases and will be dependent on the opinion of the physician in charge of treatment.

• Weight gain
• Ejaculation delay
• Lower than usual libido
• Fatigue and a drowsy mood
• Perspiring at an increased rate

Go to the emergency room straight away if you experience (or suspect that you are suffering from) severe adverse reactions, including a bad fever, stiffness affecting the muscles, negative effects on the memory function, extreme emotional changes, a lack of coordination or any other serious reactions that have not been referenced here.

Lexapro (Escitalopram Oxalate) interacts with MAO inhibitors, which can result in an extremely harmful drug reaction. Your physician will tell you not to take this medicine if an MAOI has been administered within the previous 14 days. After treatment has ceased, you will need to allow a period of 14 days or more before an MAOI can be taken.

Certain people will experience suicidal ideation after taking an antidepressant medicine. Make sure that you ask your physician about this, and remember that regular progress checks will be needed during treatment to monitor your condition.
