Losartan

Losartan (Losartan Potassium) is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or with other high blood pressure medications, such as diuretics that help the body get rid of water. Its active ingredient is a type of medicine called an angiotensin II antagonist. It works by preventing the action of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II.

This drug blocks the receptors that angiotensin II acts on, and so prevents its actions. The main result of this is that the peripheral blood vessels are allowed to widen, which means that there is more space and less resistance in these blood vessels. This is the main mechanism by which the pressure in the blood vessels is lowered.

Losartan (Losartan Potassium) comes in the form of tablets. You must consult your doctor to determine the correct dosage required to treat your particular condition, as the dosage requirements vary for each patient, depending on the severity of the condition being treated. Your doctor may need to prescribe a low dosage for you to begin with, which may then be gradually increased.

These tablets can be taken with or without food. Take it at the same time each day. For example, if you take the medication every morning before or after breakfast, you will establish a regular routine and be less likely to forget your dose.

More common side effects of Losartan (Losartan Potassium) may include cough, dizziness, upper respiratory infection. Less common and rare side effects may include allergic reactions, back and leg pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, insomnia, muscle cramps or pain, nasal congestion, sinus problems, swelling of face, lips, throat, and tongue.
