Furosemido (Furosemide) is a water pill (also referred to as a loop diuretic) that works by causing an increased amount of excess water and salt to be removed from the body by the kidneys and released in the urine. This makes it effective at treating edema, which can cause a buildup of fluids in lungs (this is known as pulmonary edema), ankles or elsewhere in the body.
In most cases, fluid retention occurs as a result of a medical condition, such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney diseases. A build up of fluid in the lungs can cause breathing difficulties. Removing the fluid can help to make breathing easier, and may also reduce swelling in the limbs. Other uses for this medicine include treating high blood pressure (hypertension) and hypercalcemia.
The dosage required for patients using Furosemido (Furosemide) to treat edema, hypertension or any other conditions will be decided by a physician, based on various factors, such as the patient`s health, the condition being treated, and other factors not listed here. This drug comes in the form of 20mg or 40mg tablets, which are taken by mouth, with a glass of water.
Adults undergoing treatment for edema may be instructed to take a dosage which usually falls between the 20mg to 80mg per day range. However, the physician may prescribe a second dosage, and in some cases, adjustments may also be needed. Maintenance therapy usually requires a reduced dosage. Physicians usually tell patients treating hypertension to take 40mg, twice per day.
Medicines can cause side effects, and Furosemido (Furosemide) is no exception. Possible reactions include:
