Dostinex

Dostinex (Cabergoline) belongs to a group of drugs known as dopamine agonists. It is prescribed to treat a condition called hyperprolactinemia. This condition occurs as a result of too much prolactin, a natural substance produced by the body which helps women who are breast feeding to produce milk. However, excess levels of prolactin may cause fertility problems, missed periods and unwanted breast milk production. Male patients with too much prolactin may experience an enlargement of the breasts and a reduced libido. This drug works by reducing the amount of prolactin produced by the pituitary gland.

Dostinex (Cabergoline) comes as tablets, which are taken orally. You will need to consult your physician prior to the commencement of treatment, so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. Adult patients being treated for hyperprolactinemia are often directed to take a dosage consisting of 0.25mg, taken twice per week. If necessary, the patient may be told to increase their dosage by 0.25mg twice per week, however, the maximum dosage is generally 1mg, taken twice per week.

Patients undergoing treatment with Dostinex (Cabergoline) may experience side effects, such as:

• Numbness
• Dizziness
• Hot flashes
• Feeling depressed
• Dryness in the mouth

If any side effects are noticed, you should inform your physician. There is a possibility that some patients may experience severe side effects. You must seek medical care straight away if you notice swelling of the feet or ankles, breathlessness, weight loss, pain in the back, reduced urination or any other sings that indicate you may be suffering from serious side effects.

Before you begin taking this medication, you must notify your physician if you have a history of liver disease, hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, pericardial fibrosis, retroperitoneal fibrosis or heart valve disease.

Taking this medication may cause unusual sexual urges or in some cases, gambling problems. Discuss the risk of this with your physician before starting treatment.
